History of CDI
Positioned at the critical juncture of climate action and democratic reform.
2016
David Orr, an early advisor to CDI, brought together peers from across the U.S. for a critical discussion on the intensifying heat and government inaction, calling the gathering the "State of American Democracy." The conversation centered on how the U.S. economic and political systems must evolve to face the realities of a warming planet.
The urgency of this call to action was amplified by the results of the November 2016 election, which led to the rollback of key business and environmental regulations.
2018
The “State of American Democracy” conference brought together 32 speakers and panelists to address the preservation of the ecological systems essential for life and the urgent governmental action required to tackle the climate crisis. The event featured some of today’s most insightful practitioners, scientists, educators, and journalists, all dedicated to shifting the political conversation from frustration and fear to meaningful, constructive change. Their shared mission: to build a resilient democracy that benefits everyone while protecting our shared future.

Democracy Unchained, edited by David Orr, Andrew Gumbel, Bakari Kitwana, and William S. Becker, presents a blueprint for revitalizing American democracy and addressing the systemic issues that have long hindered effective governance. Jane Mayer, chief Washington correspondent at The New Yorker, praises the book, stating, “This remarkable book is like speed dialing the smartest minds in America, and getting them to tackle the country's toughest problems. It's full of fresh and urgently needed ideas.”
